Streaming on the Netflix paid subscription platform, The Last Kingdom stars Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox, Ian Hart, Tobias Santelmann, Thure Lindhardt, Millie Brady, Alexandre Willaume, Julia Bache-Wiig, Joseph Millson, and Peter McDonald. An adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s novel series, The Saxon Stories, the historical drama follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Dreymon), the son of a 9th Century Saxon nobleman. After killing his father, Danish invaders kidnap the boy and he is raised by their warlord, Ragnar. Years later, when Ragnar is killed, Uhtred vows to avenge him, even as he returns to Bebbanburg to claim his birthright.

The Last Kingdom has so far adapted the first four books in the series, with a third season likely to cover books five and six: The Burning Land and Death of Kings.

At the start of The Burning Land, King Alfred of Wessex is in ill health while his heir is an untested youth.

After defeating a Viking attack, Uthred decides to break with Alfred and focus on reclaiming his ancestral home on the Northumbrian coast.

Allied with his old friend Ragnar and his old foe Haesten he aims to invade and conquer Wessex itself.

But Uthred finds himself town between his loyalties and is forced to make a monumentous choice – to realise his dream of a united and Christian England, or be responsible for condemning it to oblivion. www.express.co.uk
